Sayid discovers that compasses don't do a very good job of pointing north on the island. Boone has a 'vision' on the island, where Shannon is killed by the Smoke Monster, only he thinks it's all real. We see the thrilling conclusion to Hurley's sea urchin incident, where Jin tries to get him to eat some kind of seaweed concoction. Boone threatens to kill Locke until he realizes that what he saw wasn't real. Locke teaches Walt how to throw a knife, which sets him at odds with Michael. While Sayid is discussing Rousseau's maps, Michael announces his plan to build a raft to try and get off the island. The tail section finds the Dharma Flame station, and they find a radio inside. Goodwin and Ana Lucia go to higher ground to try and get a signal for the radio. Ana Lucia confronts Goodwin about the fact that she knows he's one of the Others, and kills him in the process. Walt doesn't want to help with the boat, and ends up wandering off into the jungle, where he's attacked by a polar bear. Locke & Michael go after him and save him. We finish the episode with Locke & Boone, out in the jungle trying to find Vincent, coming across Claire stumbling through the jungle instead. The episode runs 53:40 and is 446MB to download. This is awesome, but why didn't you chronologically insert Claire and Ethan's romantic getaway at the Staff? The only justification I can think of is that Claire experiences those flashbacks in "Maternity Leave" as vivid memories, whereas most flashbacks are independent of their character's current mindset. But they're not made-up dreams or anything, so I still think for your purposes they should have gone between "Raised by Another" and "Special"...
ReplyDeleteThat was a tough one. With your ordinary flashback, that's just what they are, a glimpse into the past of a certain character; they don't have any relation to what's happening in the present (aside from providing underlying character themes, but that's not what we're talking about here).
ReplyDeleteWith Claire's memories in "Maternity Leave", we're not exactly looking at a flashback so much as we're looking at Claire regaining her memory. So, while we're looking at events that occurred in early October, what we were watching was Claire experiencing those memories during "Maternity Leave". It's kind of a fine line, I know. The thing that sort of pushed it over the edge is the last memory Claire regains is when she's outside in the jungle, she actually plays out the memory in front of her, while she's still standing there in the background.
I really went back and forth on this, even seeking input from some other people. I think I could have put them in chronologically, and it would have worked fine, but I also think it works fine this way too.
